BCCI yet to speak with Rahul Dravid on future as Team India head coach, says report

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is yet to hold discussion with Team India head coach Rahul Dravid and his support staff regarding their future post the ongoing Cricket World Cup.

Had India lost the World Cup semi-final against New Zealand in Mumbai on Wednesday, the term of Rahul Dravid and his support staff would have ended since the contracts would expire post the World Cup.

However, according to a report in Cricbuzz, thanks to the Men in Blue’s impressive form in the World Cup so far, where they have won 10 out of as many games, a contract extension could be on the cards. However, it all depends on Dravid’s willingness to continue as head coach.

In the last one month or even before, Dravid has not had no discussion with the BCCI over a potential contract extension, and instead remained focussed on the job ahead. In fact, following the Men in Blue’s semi-final exit from the 2022 T20 World Cup, people who were close to Dravid had even suggested he step down as India coach. However, Dravid chose to stay on with the team.

The report goes onto say that batting coach Vikram Rathour, bowling coach Paras Mhambrey and fielding coach T Dilip were likely to get contract extensions.

A few officials of the BCCI reportedly had reservations with Dravid’s coaching style but that perception might have been altered with the team’s excellent performance in the World Cup so far.

India qualified for the final of the 2023 World Cup with a 70-run win over New Zealand in the first semi-final in Mumbai on Wednesday. Centuries from Virat Kohli and Shreyas Iyer led the Men in Blue to 397, and in reply, Mohammed Shami ran riot with figures of 7/57 to see the Kiwis off for 327.

India will face the winner of the second semi-final between South Africa and Australia in Sunday’s final in Ahmedabad.
