India vs England Day 3 LIVE

After 77 overs, England 316/6 (Ollie Pope 148, Rehan Ahmed 16)

STUMPS ON DAY 3 — England bounce back in style on the ‘Moving Day’ with Ollie Pope’s brilliant hundred helping them end the day with 316 on the board, giving the visitors a solid 126-run lead with four wickets still in hand! Not many would have expected such a dramatic turn of events, especially after the manner with which the Indian batters had bossed the English attack on Day 2 and collected a 175-run first innings lead.

Ravichandran Ashwin bowls out the final over of the day, conceding five off it including a boundary to Rehan Ahmed in the second delivery. Rehan’s batting on 16 off 31 balls, with Pope still going strong on 148 and the partnership between the two worth 41 so far.

There were those who would have expected India’s chase to begin shortly before stumps after Ben Stokes’ dismissal resulted in the Englishmen losing their fifth wicket with 163 on the board. Pope’s defiant knock, however, has breathed life into England’s hopes of heading to VIzag with a victory behind them.

India vs England Day 3 LIVE

After 74 overs, England 304/6 (Ollie Pope 145, Rehan Ahmed 8)

Bumrah returns for one last burst on the third day, with the Indians looking pretty tired at the moment. FOUR! Flicks the ball through square leg off a delivery that angles into his pad. He sets off for a single two balls later to bring up the 300 for the visitors! Bumrah, meanwhile, had been cramping up at the start of the spell, but manages to complete the over. Jadeja continues from the other end and concedes four singles.

India vs England Day 3 LIVE

After 72 overs, England 295/6 (Ollie Pope 138, Rehan Ahmed 6)

Pope takes England’s lead past 100 with a brace off Axar in his 15th over, guiding the ball down the ground past mid off. That should give the visitors a psychological boost. Three singles conceded by Jadeja in the following over. Another five overs left in the day’s play.

India vs England Day 3 LIVE

After 70 overs, England 289/6 (Ollie Pope 133, Rehan Ahmed 5)

FOUR! Now where did that come from? Pope decides to play a scoop straight over his head in Test cricket — think we’ve seen it all now. Siraj gives the ball a chase all the way to the long stop boundary, albeit in vain. 70 overs done in the England innings, and their lead is touching 100 right now. Another seven overs left in the day's play.

India vs England Day 3 LIVE

After 68 overs, England 281/6 (Ollie Pope 126, Rehan Ahmed 4)

FOUR! Confident start for Rehan Ahmed, who joins Pope at the centre after Foakes’ dismissal, punching a delivery that is a fraction short outside off. The no-ball hooter, meanwhile, goes off yet again at the stadium, and Jadeja once again is the bowler guilty of overstepping.

16:09 (IST)

India vs England Day 3 LIVE

BOWLED! Axar makes up for the dropped chance by getting rid of Ben Foakes with a zooter — the ball staying extra low and beating the bottom of the bat. Foakes was shaping for a cut, but there was little he could’ve done to block this, with the variable bounce once again playing tricks with the batter. ENG 275/6 after 67

India vs England Day 3 LIVE

After 66 overs, England 270/5 (Ollie Pope 120, Ben Foakes (WK) 34)

Pope brings up another milestone after his century, this time completing 100 of the sixth-wicket partnership with Foakes with a single off Axar. Outstanding partnership between the two, one that has brought the visitors right back in the game! 300 is very much on the cards for them now and the might just fancy their chances if they’re able to stretch their lead to 150, with India batting fourth on this surface. FOUR! Another boundary for Pope as a top-edge off a reverse sweep goes over Rohit at slip and runs all the way to the third man fence.

15:56 (IST)

India vs England Day 3 LIVE

After 64 overs, England 261/5 (Ollie Pope 114, Ben Foakes (WK) 32)

Axar in place of Jadeja now. FOUR! Pope’s a lot more relaxed after bringing up the big milestone, and has little trouble smacking a juicy full toss through midwicket to collect his 11th boundary that also takes England past 250. Collects another boundary in the following over, this time with a reverse sweep off Jadeja, who gets a change in end and replaces Ashwin. DROPPED! Axar puts down a chance at backward point to give Pope a reprieve on 110 after the centurion attempts to reverse sweep Jadeja again. Axar had timed his jump well for the ball that was travelling at a fair height, only for the ball to burst out of his palms in the last second. FOUR! Pope rubs salt on the wound by collecting a boundary right after the dropped chance, punching the slightly short delivery through extra cover.

India vs England Day 3 LIVE

After 62 overs, England 248/5 (Ollie Pope 102, Ben Foakes (WK) 31)

The ball appears to have lost its shape, failing the hoop test during the drinks interval, and the umpires decide to bring out the box to select a similar-looking one with as much wear and tear. Ashwin continues after the break, with three runs coming off his 20th over including a bye.

India vs England Day 3 LIVE

Drinks brought to the field at the end of the 61st over, in which Pope brings up his second Test ton in Asia after his 108 against Pakistan in Rawalpindi in late 2022. England, meanwhile, have almost gone level with their first innings score, and still have five wickets in the bank.

India vs England Day 3 LIVE

CENTURY UP FOR OLLIE POPE — his fifth in Tests as well as his second in the format in Asia! It’s also the first century by a batter in this Test, with three Indians having been dismissed in the 80s. Pope clips the ball towards deep midwicket, and gets enough time to push for a third, bringing up the three-figure mark in the process! Pope takes off his helmet in celebration and hugs Foakes, with whom he has added 80 for the sixth wicket so far, and receives a standing ovation from the crowd at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium. ENG 243/5

India vs England Day 3 LIVE

After 60 overs, England 239/5 (Ollie Pope 97, Ben Foakes (WK) 28)

Jadeja oversteps again! What is it with his foot constantly landing beyond the popping crease. Two runs off his over, with Pope collecting a single shortly after the no ball. Four off the next over by Ashwin, including a brace to Foakes in the penultimate delivery. Pope’s one hit to the fence away from bringing up his century now.

15:31 (IST)

India vs England Day 3 LIVE

After 58 overs, England 233/5 (Ollie Pope 95, Ben Foakes (WK) 25)

Siraj got just one over in his second spell after a two-over burst earlier in the day, with Jadeja being brought back in his place. Jadeja concedes a single each to Pope and Foakes at the start of a new spell. Ashwin concedes five in the next over, including a brace to Foakes who clips the ball through midwicket after advancing down the track. The partnership will be starting to worry the hosts now, and skipper Rohit will be hoping either of Ashwin or Jadeja is able to break it.

15:24 (IST)

India vs England Day 3 LIVE

After 56 overs, England 226/5 (Ollie Pope 92, Ben Foakes (WK) 21)

One seamer replaces another, with Siraj being brought back in place of Bumrah. The local lad had bowled just two overs so far today, and Rohit hopes he’s able to get something out of a ball that is showing signs of reverse after 54 overs. FIFTY of the partnership comes up between Pope and Foakes for the sixth wicket after the former steers the ball behind square for a brace. Later in the over, Siraj fires one down the leg side that keeper Bharat is unable to stop, resulting in four byes — valuable runs for the visitors as they aim to set a target in excess of 100. FOUR! Pope becomes the first batter in this Test to move into the 90s with a pre-medidated reverse sweep in front of square in the following over, his 10th boundary of the innings. Pope tries a similar shot in the following delivery, but the ball bumps off the ground before setting in Rohit’s hands at slip.

15:16 (IST)

India vs England Day 3 LIVE

After 54 overs, England 211/5 (Ollie Pope 84, Ben Foakes (WK) 18)

Ashwin replaces Jadea in the attack, and starts off with a ball than turns sharply, beating Pope’s inside edge while the batter had pressed forward for a drive. The ball ends up sailing over the stumps and running away to the fine leg fence for four byes. Foakes collects a brace a couple of deliveries later with a drive past mid on. FOUR! Swept square of the wicket by Foakes off a delivery pitched outside off by Ashwin. Second boundary of the innings for the keeper-batter! 11 off Ashwin’s first over at the start of a new spell.

15:08 (IST)

India vs England Day 3 LIVE

After 52 overs, England 200/5 (Ollie Pope 83, Ben Foakes (WK) 12)

Pope and Foakes deal in singles, collecting one each in Bumrah’s second over of the spell and as many off Jadeja’s bowling in the subsequent over. Jadeja also oversteps in the fourth delivery, bringing up the 200 for the visitors with a no-ball.

15:01 (IST)

India vs England Day 3 LIVE

After 50 overs, England 195/5 (Ollie Pope 81, Ben Foakes (WK) 10)

Bumrah’s back with the old ball, with the hosts having a catching mid on in place in addition to a slip and a gully. The pacer isn’t bowling with full pace at the start of his new spell, with a few of his deliveries measuring in the early-to-mid 130s. Fires a yorker in the fifth delivery which Foakes attempts to drive but is beaten by late movement. Bumrah starts his spell with a maiden. FOUR! Comedy of errors at the midwicket boundary as substitute Patidar and Ashwin run towards the ball from different directions, only for the ball to pass between them and hit the advertising cushion after a bit of confusion between the two.

14:50 (IST)

India vs England Day 3 LIVE

After 48 overs, England 191/5 (Ollie Pope 77, Ben Foakes (WK) 10)

India burn a review in Axar’s 10th over after Pope charges a long way down the pitch and is rapped on the pad well outside off. The appeal for LBW is a faint one, but in a rather bizarre move, Rohit makes the ’T’ signal — more out of indulgence than need. The impact is miles outside the off stump. Three runs added to the English total in the following over, including through a leg bye, and England are in the lead again!

14:42 (IST)

India vs England Day 3 LIVE

After 46 overs, England 185/5 (Ollie Pope 74, Ben Foakes (WK) 9)

Axar collects a maiden in his second over after tea. Foakes, meanwhile, decides to put Ashwin on a wild goose chase again after working the ball past mid on, with Ashwin able to save a run on this occasion. England one hit over the fence away from getting into the lead now.

India vs England Day 3 LIVE

After 44 overs, England 181/5 (Ollie Pope 72, Ben Foakes (WK) 6)

FOUR! A boundary in each of the first two overs after tea, with Pope moving into the 70s now. Plays a neat little flick off Jadeja, with Ashwin giving the ball a chase and putting in a slide near the boundary rope, albeit in vain.

14:38 (IST)

India vs England Day 3 LIVE

India vs England Day 3 LIVE

Pope and Foakes make their way back to the centre with the former now key to his team’s chances of setting a competitive target. Axar to start off after tea. Big session coming up, possibly a do-or-die one for the Englishmen if they intend to travel to Vizag with a 1-0 lead.

14:13 (IST)

India vs England Day 3 LIVE

After 42 overs, England 172/5 (Ollie Pope 67, Ben Foakes (WK) 2)

TEA ON DAY 3 — Jadeja bowls out the final over of the session, collecting his first maiden in 11 overs. Axar had replaced Ashwin from the other end in the previous over, and bowled out a maiden as well. A much better session for the Indians where they were able to get four wickets while conceding 83 runs in 27 overs.

Jasprit Bumrah brought the Indians back into the game at a time when Duckett and Pope were going slam-bang against the spinners, striking twice in as many overs. Jadeja and Ashwin then castled Bairstow and Stokes respectively, resulting in the visitors losing half their side while still trailing the hosts! The momentum is once again with the home team at the interval, though England still retain hope of setting a target in the three figures with Pope still going strong at the centre. We’ll be back in 20 minutes’ time.

14:06 (IST)

India vs England Day 3 LIVE

After 40 overs, England 172/5 (Ollie Pope 67, Ben Foakes (WK) 2)

Pope collects a brace off Jadeja shortly after Ashwin’s dismissal of Stokes, steering the wide ball behind point off the left-arm spinner with Siraj saving a couple of runs for the hosts with a bit of deft footwork right in front of the advertising cushion. Foakes, meanwhile, gets off the mark with a single off Ashwin in the following over. Foakes and Pope collect a single each off Jadeja in the 40th. Another five minutes left for tea.

14:03 (IST)

India vs England Day 3 LIVE

STAT: Ravichandran Ashwin has now dismissed Ben Stokes 12 times in Tests, the most by an Indian bowler against a single batter in the format. Ashwin is now level with Kapil Dev, who dismissed Pakistan’s Mudassar Naza as many times.

India vs England Day 3 LIVE

After 37 overs, England 163/5 (Ollie Pope 60, Ben Foakes (WK) 0)

BOWLED! What a ball from Ashwin to get rid of Stokes, England's top-scorer in their first innings! The southpaw was shaping for a block, only for the ball to drift in slightly and get just about enough turn to beat his outside edge but clip the off-stump at the same time. An absolute work of art, was that dismissal. England have now lost half their side and still trail by 27! Stokes had been blocking away so far, much like he did in the first half of his 88-ball 70 in the first innings, but loses his wicket before he can begin his acceleration, making his knock look all the more scratchy.

After 35 overs, England 157/4 (Ollie Pope 57, Ben Stokes (C) 4)

Stokes goes for a reverse sweep against Jadeja, but can get only a single. Three off Jadeja’s over, including a no ball — the second time he’s overstepped in this spell. Third maiden on the trot for Ashwin in the following over. Another 25 minutes to go for tea and India will be hoping to prise out another wicket, preferrably that of the set batter in Pope.

13:41 (IST)

India vs England Day 3 LIVE

After 33 overs, England 154/4 (Ollie Pope 56, Ben Stokes (C) 3)

FOUR! Pope gets down on one knee and swipes across the line to collect his seventh boundary, ensuring he keeps the pressure levels in check with the odd four. Appeal for stumping against Stokes off Ashwin’s bowling in the following over, and the square leg umpire decides to consult his counterpart upstairs. Stokes had the tip of his back foot touching the ground, which leads to the giant screen flashing the words Not Out’. Back-to-back maidens for Ashwin now.

13:38 (IST)

India vs England Day 3 LIVE

After 31 overs, England 150/4 (Ollie Pope 52, Ben Stokes (C) 3)

Jadeja gives Pope a fair warning with a sharp delivery in the penultimate ball of his fifth over, the ball kicking up higher than usual and beating the batter’s outside edge when he was shaping for a block. Just one off the over. Ashwin follows it with a maiden. The 150 comes up for the visitors in the meantime.

After 29 overs, England 149/4 (Ollie Pope 52, Ben Stokes (C) 2)

FOUR! Ollie Pope dances down the track and converts the loopy delivery from Ashwin, who replaces Jadeja, into a full toss, smacking it towards the midwicket fence to bring up his half-century with a boundary! The English No 3 brings up the milestone for the 12th time in Tests and makes a fine comeback after getting dismissed for 1 on the opening day.

BOWLED! Jadeja strikes right after the drinks interval as Bairstow ends up getting his off-stump rattled while shaping for a leave! This one pitched slightly outside off and Bairstow expected it to spin away; instead it held its line and crashed into the pole. England four down now and still trail by 50. ENG 140/4

Spin back from both ends now with Axar Patel replacing Bumrah, the latter getting a breather after a five-over burst in which he got two wickets. FOUR! Pope inches closer to his half-century with a boundary, advancing down the pitch and lofting the ball over mid on. Five off Axar’s first over of the spell.

India vs England Day 3 LIVE

After 26 overs, England 131/3 (Ollie Pope 42, Jonny Bairstow 5)

FOUR! A boundary after 39 deliveries for the Englishmen as Pope decides to bring the reverse sweep back in play against the left-arm spinner, placing it wide of the slip fielder. A couple of more of these should help the visitors breathe easy after a superb spell from Bumrah helped slow them down. Drinks brought to the field at the end of the 26th over.

India vs England Day 3 LIVE

After 25 overs, England 125/3 (Ollie Pope 37, Jonny Bairstow 4)

Just a two-over spell for Siraj as Jadeja is brought back from his end after having bowled just one over — the last one before lunch. Tidy start for the left-arm spinner, conceding a couple of singles at the start of a new spell. Bumrah, meanwhile, continues from the other end, bowling a fifth over on the trot. Concedes three singles.

After 23 overs, England 120/3 (Ollie Pope 34, Jonny Bairstow 2)

Another tidy over from Siraj, with just two singles coming off it as new batter Jonny Bairstow, who had struck a lively 37 in the first innings, gets off the mark. Bairstow then opts to stay cautious against Bumrah, who collects five dots in a row before conceding a single off the last delivery.

India vs England Day 3 LIVE

After 21 overs, England 117/3 (Ollie Pope 33, Jonny Bairstow 2)

Pace from both ends for the first time in this match since the start of Day 1, with Mohammed Siraj being brought on the moment the ball is starting to reverse a bit. The Hyderabadi is off to a steady start, conceding two singles from his first over. Bumrah, meanwhile, is in the middle of a testing spell and is challenging the batters with his variations, firing a yorker at Pope measuring 143 clicks before inducing a chip square of the wicket with a slower one that would have led to a sitter had Rohit placed a fielder at point, instead allowing the batter an easy single. Bumrah then nips out the Root threat in the bud by trapping him leg-before, once again using reverse to prise out a wicket. India are back in the game, and it’s pace that is working for them now instead of spin.

12:48 (IST)

India vs England Day 3 LIVE

OUT! Two wickets in as many overs from Bumrah! What a spell this is turning out to be from the Indian pace spearhead, bringing the hosts back into the game at a time when the Englishmen were gnawing away at the lead at a dizzying pace. Angles the ball into Root and raps him on the pad right in front of middle that elicits a massive LBW appeal from the Indians, with umpire Chris Gaffaney raising his finger right away. Root goes for the review and gets 'Umpire's Call' on wickets. ENG 117/3

After 19 overs, England 113/2 (Ollie Pope 31, Joe Root 0)

BOWLED! Bumrah doesn’t really depend on the conditions to get wickets now does he. Had missed out on an LBW in the previous over against Duckett, and decides to take matters into his own hands in this over by sending the off stump on a cartwheel as the southpaw falls just three short of a half-century. Duckett was looking to drive this through cover but was beaten on the inside edge with an inswinger, getting a hint of reverse on that.

India vs England Day 3 LIVE

After 17 overs, England 97/1 (Ben Duckett 39, Ollie Pope 23)

Pace brought back from the other end, with Jasprit Bumrah replacing Jadeja with the latter having bowled just one over so far today (with Mohammed Siraj yet to bowl). Pope collects a brace in the third delivery, driving the ball through cover, to bring up the fifty partnership with Duckett for the 2nd wicket in just 43 deliveries! Big appeal for LBW against Duckett in the final delivery, and the umpire shakes his head. The Indians too decide against going for the review, though they miss out on a wicket as replays later show the ball to be hitting the leg stump! It was keeper Srikar Bharat who thought the ball was drifting down leg, and he'll be under a lot more presssure now.

India vs England Day 3 LIVE

After 15 overs, England 89/1 (Ben Duckett 38, Ollie Pope 16)

LUNCH ON DAY 3 — England finally manage to boss a session, not just finish ahead of the hosts. Not only did they collect the remaining three wickets for just 15 overs to keep India’s lead to less than 200, they end up collecting 89 runs in 15 overs at nearly six-an-over for the loss of just one wicket! ‘Bazball’ didn’t quite take off in the first innings where they managed to get close to 250 thanks primarily to skipper Ben Stokes, but the English openers have given their team solid hope of setting India a competitive target now!

Ravindra Jadeja is introduced in the final over of the session, with nine runs getting added to the English total, including four byes off the second delivery as the ball misses both Duckett’s blade while the southpaw was shaping for a paddle sweep, as well as the keeper.

India vs England 1st Test Day 3 recap: KL Rahul and Ravindra Jadeja scored half-centuries to put India in command of the opening Test against England with a lead of 175 runs at stumps on the second day in Hyderabad.

Jadeja remained unbeaten on 81 and took charge after Rahul’s 86 to take the hosts to 421/7.

He and Axar Patel, on 35, were batting in a partnership of 63 runs at the close of play.

“It was a tough day,” England assistant coach Jeetan Patel told reporters.

“I think the effort the guys put in were immense. I think the way we created chances today, if they’d gone… it would be different.”

Jadeja’s fifth-wicket stand of 65 runs with KL Rahul, was laced with eight fours and two sixes, stood out in a dominant day for India, who resumed on 119/1.

The world’s top-ranked Test all-rounder then kept up the charge with wicketkeeper-batter KS Bharat, who made 41 before being dismissed by Joe Root.

Root and debutant Tom Hartley took two wickets each on a grinding day for the tourists, who bowled 87 overs after an extended final session.

To add to England’s concerns, lead spinner Jack Leach bowled just 16 overs without long spells and Patel said he struggled with his knee after getting injured while fielding on day one and two.

“I believe he’ll be back in the fourth innings. He just landed on his knee funny,” Jeetan said.

Jadeja reached his fifty after tea and waved the bat in his trademark sword celebration in front of a cheering crowd of over 25,000.

India lost two wickets in the final session, including R Ashwin who was run out after a mix-up which saw both batters at one end.
